Attractions in and around Grassy Key
Dolphin Research Center: The Dolphin Research Center is a dolphinarium on Grassy Key, Florida. The 90,000-square-foot (8,400 m2) series of saltwater lagoons carved out of the shoreline is home to 19 bottlenose dolphins and one California sea lion. It features experiences where visitors can swim with, hand-signal, or enjoy other interactive programs with the dolphins. When the International Whaling Commission imposed a moratorium on whaling in 1983, Fortom-Gouin transferred the business to his general manager and head trainer, Jayne and Mandy Rodriguez. The centre reopened as the Dolphin Research Center on July 10th, 1984. The DRC is dedicated to dolphin research and education and manages a dolphin breeding program. Currently, 19 dolphins live in the center's ninety thousand square feet of pristine seawater lagoons, with low fences separating them from the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
Parks:
Curry Hammock State Park (Grassy Key): On the ocean and bay sides of U.S. 1, this littoral park covers 260 acres of upland hammock, wetlands, and mangroves. On the bay side, there's a trail through thick hardwoods to a rocky shoreline. The ocean side is more developed, with a sandy beach, a clean bathhouse, picnic tables, a playground, grills, and a 28-site campground (open November-May). A 1.5-mi walking path winds through a hardwood hammock. Locals consider the trails that meander under canopies of arching mangroves one of the best areas for kayaking in the Keys. Manatees frequent the area, and it's a great spot for bird-watching. Herons, egrets, ibis, plovers, and sanderlings are commonly seen. Raptors are often seen in the park, too, especially during migration periods.
Nightlife: The Wreck and Galley Grill (Happy Hour) is a sports bar, and seems to have quite a few people around the bar all the time. You can enjoy eating and drinking over here.
